Persist is my entry for Ludum Dare 26 game jam with the theme Minimalism, developed in under 48 hours. It's a small story about a spirit, who is trying to reach a mysterious Goddess to ask for forgiveness for his past sins, but the Goddess really resents him and is trying her hardest to keep the spirit from reaching her, stealing his body parts and various skills with them.

Can you redeem your soul and reach salvation? Or are you doomed to lose all hope, and your whole existence, in the Goddess' deep and dark dungeons?

Check the game's Ludum Dare Page:…
Some release afterthoughts and background about the game's creation:…

Also available on:
Newgrounds (with a medal!):…

You can now also get the game for your android device, free!…

This was really fun. The story made it even better. :3

Interesting. Given how these games normally go, I expected the man's sins to be something trivial or arbitrary. For it to be something actually WORTH seeking redemption for, and something the goddess has every right NOT to forgive him for, I was expecting at all.

Random randomness with 3 platforms and a pointless loop get a DD but not that..? You created it way too earlier it seems.. xD

Anyway, making an actual complette story with morale, out of a 48h made game, and with designs what make sense
(Earth you just left for 1st level, water when you can't swim, fire when things get harder then air when you are litteraly "air")
is pure genius.

The leveldesign and changes of rules are smart, the dificulty is not easy (as some parts requiere to be precise on jumps/timeing)
but as every try-and-die the game need patience and end being not that hard after some practice, and even enjoyable on 2nd play.
The charadesigns of "the empress" for the unforgiving godess, and this spirit trapped into his stubborn redemption like a "prisoner"
of his own will also make complette sense when you end the story and know who really they are.

Also, beautiful morale...So real yet so forgotten of most of pepoles...
"Miracles can happend, but only if you do your best to make them real. Just giving up and waiting for them serves nothing"

Seriously, this would have been submited for a DD, or something equivalent for "undiscovered deviations". Minimalism does not mean
bad games, and this game is a perfect exemple of it. Keep up your amazing work ! Also, the music is perfect for what you created ^^

Critiquers often see way more thing than the artist intended to make, like litterature teachers I suppose,
but even if minimalist, this game really is a piece of pixel-art, in all the ways we can interpret the expression.
After all, minimalism also is a genre in classical arts, so why not in games too ? ^^

We don't know exactly what, but it seems he attacked the woman we see appear as the Goddess and they were both hospitalised and near dying. From the looks of it the game is the ghost working through the remorse they feel at what happened (hence why she is angry, or they are both taking part in the game and she's working through her anger at the person that put her in this situation) and at the end the ghost is willing to give up his life if it will save her's and the woman is revived in the hospital even though nobody thought she could be while the condition of the man, who was the ghost all along, suddenly worsens once he's completed the challenges and made his peace

I played this game on newgrounds before and boy did I have fun with this game. Short and simple. Though I actually ended up rage quitting when my whole body was taken away. (It's a good concept though, losing your body and making it hard to jump and swim. You're just a head that moves left and right because of it which ups the difficulty level.) I'd totally revisit this again sometime.
